In PL/SQL* Oracle, we can use conditional statement like other programming language, such as CASE and IF statement. How to do it in PL/SQL? Here’s the syntax for IF statement.

IF condition THEN
  statements;
[ELSIF condition THEN
  statements;]
[ELSE
  statements;]
END IF;

Just remember, I write ELSIF, it’s on purpose and it’s not mistyping, in this case we write “else if” in PL/SQL as ELSIF. There is an example for IF statement usage in PL/SQL. This statement will ask your age and show output based on your age input.

SET SERVEROUTPUT ON
SET VERIFY OFF
ACCEPT age PROMPT 'Insert your age'
DECLARE
  age NUMBER := &age;
BEGIN
  IF age < 17 THEN
    DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('You are teen');
  ELSIF age < 56 THEN
    DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('You are adult');
  ELSE
    DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('You are old');
END;
/

Just a little different than IF, CASE expression selects a result and returns it. The values returned by CASE is used to select one of several alternatives. The CASE syntax is shown below.

CASE selector
  WHEN axpression1 THEN result1
  WHEN expression2 THEN result2
  ...
  WHEN expressionN THEN resultN
  [ELSE resultN+1]
END;
/

For the example of CASE expression, we can use IF statement example above, just change it to CASE expression. We add text variable to store the return values from CASE expression since CASE return values.

SET SERVEROUTPUT ON
SET VERIFY OFF
ACCEPT age PROMPT 'Insert your age'
DECLARE
  age NUMBER := &age;
  text VARCHAR2(20);
BEGIN
  text:=
    CASE
      WHEN age < 17 THEN 'You are teen'
      WHEN age < 56 THEN 'You are adult'
      ELSE 'You are old'
    END;
  DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE(text);
END;
/

Example above didn’t use selector after CASE expression, you can use selector as alternatives way. I don’t really use CASE with selector anyway, but I will give you an example with selector below, I hope this can help.

SET SERVEROUTPUT ON
SET VERIFY OFF
DECLARE
  grade CHAR(1) := UPPER('&grade');
  text VARCHAR2(20);
BEGIN
  text :=
    CASE grade
      WHEN 'A' THEN 'Excellent'
      WHEN 'B' THEN 'Very Good'
      WHEN 'C' THEN 'Good'
      WHEN 'D' THEN 'Bad'
      WHEN 'E' THEN 'Poor'
      ELSE 'Not valid grade'
    END;
  DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE(text);
END;
/

I think it’s enough for Conditional in PL/SQL Oracle tutorial, maybe this can help you little, feel free to give comment to improve my blog.

Many webmasters/ bloggers want their websites/ blogs have many visitors, including me. How to increase the traffic of our website? Lot of people gave many tips about this and I’m here to summarize and collect some of the useful tips they’ve made.

Make your article title SEO, good title has eye-catching topic, short and make some of your title is the keyword that highly used in search engine but still relevant with the article.

Make an up to date article, when Michael Jackson died many people search about Michael Jackson but find dummy site with many “Michael Jackson” words, don’t make article this way, it just increase your popularity slightly but decrease your popularity for a long time. Make article with your opinions about the rising topic, even give solutions about the topic.

Make a good permalink, http://www.techguideblog.com/2009/07/tips-for-increasing-blog-participation/ is better than http://www.techguideblog.com/?p=99, easier to read and understand. Many said uncle Google prefer the first one.

Optimize relationship, with e-mail we can give signature () that is placed below your name. People can get curious and click or go to our site. My friend asked me a lot “is that your website?”, “can you teach me how to create website like you?”, “how you can make original article?” and they even give some comments on my website.

Just like your title relevant with your article, make sure your article have keywords that relevant with the topic about your website/ blog and keep focusing to that one, don’t make article that’s not relevant with your website although it’s popular.

Exchange your website link; do you have any friends that have websites/ blogs? Ask them to exchange links. The visitors from their websites can be your visitors and they can get more visitors too, mutual-ism.

Join to traffic exchange website, www.trafficswarm.com can be a good solution to increase your websites traffic.

Join with social bookmarking websites, such as Technorati and Bloglines.

After a long sleep, I’m back and I want to start with a new topic, database. Okay, the database I’m talking about is Oracle, with using PL/SQL commands. The first time of this topic, I will talk about making sequence in Oracle. What is sequence? We can imagine sequence as a table that keep, of course, sequence numbers, this will be useful when you need to make sequence of numbers automatically, so you don’t have to make a new column that save those numbers or insert it manually.

To make a sequence we can use some options:

START WITH n. When we first create the sequence, that sequence will be started with n.

INCREMENT BY n. Define the increment value of your sequence, if it isn’t declared, it will set to 1.

MINVALUE n. Define the minimum value of the sequence can generate, if it isn’t declared, the sequence is assumed have no minimal value (NOMINVALUE).

MAXVALUE n. Define the maximum value of the sequence can generate, if it isn’t declared, the sequence is assumed have no maximum value (NOMAXVALUE).

CYCLE. Allow sequence to back with MINVALUE if sequence has reached its MAXVALUE. If it isn’t declared, sequence will not back to MINVALUE (NOCYCLE).

CACHE. Allow object sequence to do caching from the values that will be generated to increase performance. If it isn’t declared, sequence will not use cache (NOCACHE).

How to declare it

CREATE SEQUENCE sequence_name
START WITH 2
INCREMENT BY 3
MAXVALUE 98
CYCLE;

To use a sequence, we have to know that sequence is similar to struct variable. It have two virtual variable, CURVAL and NEXTVAL. When we read the value of NEXTVAL, the CURVAL field will be filled with NEXTVAL, and NEXTVAL value will increase automatically by 1 or your setting with INCREMENT BY n. This is a example how to do it

INSERT INTO table_name values(sequence_name.NEXTVAL);

To change the settings, you can use alter command

ALTER SEQUENCE sequence_name
INCREMENT BY 1
START WITH 1;

To delete a sequence you can use drop command

DROP SEQUENCE sequence_name;

Well, that’s it for now, hope this tutorial can help you. Feel free to comment here if you have any questions.

This article will help you to do online transactions, perhaps interested in online payment method, that provides easy and simple way to do shopping, but also some risks ahead about security. These tips provide basic knowledge to increase security and awareness about online transactions.

When you do transaction or open an e-payment website such PayPal, make sure you do visit the real website. Website phishing nowadays is very tricky to fool you. Look at the URL at your browser, make sure it is the real one, and usually this kind of site are using secure HTTP or HTTPS.

Paypal Secure HTTP

Don’t tell anybody about your username and password. In the internet, don’t ever trust anyone to share your passwords, just trust yourself. Change the password periodically and make a strong password, like some combination with numbers, lower case, upper case letters and symbols.

Don’t use public computer to do online transaction and don’t lose a sight when you are doing a transaction. Many people use public computer and so there’s a chance one of many people is a cracker.

Update your anti-virus periodically. Viruses not only can delete your data or make systems errors, but they can also track your data and keep your data and install a program that can see your informations such as passwords and credit card pin.

Don’t trust an e-mail that include a link to a suspicious website that you don’t know or never see before, who knows it’s a phishing website that disguise like a real one.

If you find something weird when you are doing transactions, just cancel it and contact your bank customer service immediately.

After you done, make sure you’re logged out successfully.

In some case, there is a few that use Microsoft Office 2007. Most of them still using Microsoft Office 2003, and Microsoft Office 2007 brings a new format, smaller file size and new extension, like .docx that replace old .doc. But somehow, Microsoft Office 2003 can not open this new format. This is of course in Microsoft Word 2007, you have to save as Word 97-2003 Document. Unfortunately, you forgot to change your word document into .doc format and you couldn’t open it in your office computer because their computer didn’t use Microsoft Office 2007. There’s an important document and project to be shown to your superior, you couldn’t do anything but begging to delay it to the next day, scolded, salary-cut, kicked from the job, go home and tell to your wife that you didn’t bring any money and your wife left you, wait wait, these are not the main problem, but these things can be happened to your life. So for the main problem, how can I always remember to save as .doc format instead of .docx format in Microsoft Word 2007?

Word 2007 by default will save your document in .docx format. Of course like the illustration above, Word 2003 or below can’t read this format. The easiest way is to set the default save format in your Word 2007. Open your Word 2007 application and click office button that on the top left Word 2007, click Word Options.

Save as 97-2003 document

As you can see now, there are two column is available in this window. Choose Save tab that is placed in the left column. In the right column, see in the Save Document section and in this section you can see an option “Save files in this format:” and the combo box is set to Word Document (*.docx). Change this option to Word 97-2003 Document (*.doc) and make sure you click OK. Now your Word 2007 will save any document to .doc by default.

The simplest answer is the most obvious one- there are just more viruses out there for PCs. The question then becomes why are more viruses written for PCs than Macs? Do virus writers prefer to attack PCs? Is it easier to attack the windows operating system? Yes and yes. There are many perspectives from which you could analyze the question but the bottom line says it all. PCs occupy a significantly larger portion of the computer market and therefore provide more opportunity for an attacker to make money.

When deciding on a web hosting service a big consideration is whether they will handle all your security issues. Security leaks in Internet Explorer are a common way for malware (software designed to do bad things) to infect a computer and advertise on it. Ever see one of those ads that says, “Your computer might not be secure! Click here to test your protection?” I’d be loathing to try it, if I were you. With the rise of these types of security flaws, called social engineering exploits, there will always be a chance that any format, pc or Mac has a chance of exposure.

Virus protection software has included some new features over the years inspired by free anti-virus innovations. All lot of web hosting includes these software solutions to protect your valuable information. Some of the new anti-virus protection programs have a star graphic or check mark next to web search links to indicate the site you visit won’t be “phishing” for your information. This will also protect against the scariest threat of all on the internet- Identity theft.

There are so many different types of threats it can be really difficult to keep up. Rest assured if your web hosting keeps your operating system up to date, regularly update their anti-virus software, has a firewall ready, and uses some sort of ad-ware protection you can be confident that your service- pc or Mac is safe enough to do all of your daily business.

In the end, PCs are less expensive than Macs. They do basically the same things and work equally well in most respects. To prefer one over the other based on the fact one is less secure is more a reflection of your web hosting’s inability to protect you than on the inherent architecture differences. It makes more sense to say I like Macs because they look so much cooler than it does to say it’s because they are more secure.

What can I get by validating XHTML in my blog? Well, some people say it can help Uncle Google to read and crawl your site, because Uncle is older and older and more hard to do reading. Before I use this code, my blog home page is always not valid due to a reason, after I insert a video from YouTube, some warnings and errors always occur. I search and find some tips to make YouTube Embed Video that you’ve insert is valid. Let’s take a look first with YouTube default Embed Code.

<param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param>
<param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param>
<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/sJi6amKnNNE&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed>
</object>

That code above is not valid by W3C XHTML validator. So you have to change that code into something different than above.

<object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" style="width:310px; height:260px;"
data="http://www.youtube.com/v/XFcLU7hOeQI&hl=en&fs=1">
<param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/XFcLU7hOeQI&hl=en&fs=1" />
</object>

This format above now is valid by XHTML Validator, but as you can see now, every YouTube Embed Code are always have ‘&’ ampersand. This is another problem that make your Embed Video is still not valid by XHTML Validator. For this problem, you have to change every ‘&’ to ‘&amp;’

<object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" style="width:310px; height:260px;"
data="http://www.youtube.com/v/XFcLU7hOeQI&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1">
<param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/XFcLU7hOeQI&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" />
</object>

That’s it. It’s working on my blog, may this tips can help you to validate your site when you insert an Embed Video from YouTube. You can comment if you want to ask or share about this article.

What exactly recursion is in programming? Recursion is a function that calls the function itself. Thus, in the body of function there is a command that called the function itself. If you use it well, it can solve a problem much more simple and easy. Recursion itself uses a large amount of memory, so be aware not to use it if not necessary. To make a good recursion, of course the functions must have a condition that makes it stop, so the function will not do an infinite looping. I’ve tried it without a stop condition, I compiled it and wow, NOD32 detected my .exe as a virus, I don’t know if the NOD32 made a false detection or not, but if it’s true, then it’s not too difficult to make a virus, eh? Just a little mistake in a program that you’ve made for good reasons and you’ve made a virus.

This code below is an example of how recursion function is working.

#include <stdio.h>
#include <conio.h>

void letter(char alp)
{
	if (alp <= 'e')
	{
		printf("%c ", alp);
		letter(alp + 1);
	}
}

void main()
{
	char temp = 'a';
	letter(temp);
	getch();
}

We call the function and it will print letters from ‘a’ to ‘e’. From the start of the program at void main, we fill a variable with char type called temp with ‘a’. We then call the letter function with temp as parameter, into the letter function, the variable named alp will be filled with ‘a’. Here’s the stop condition, if alp is lower or equal than ‘e’, the function will continue its routine, the function will print what is in the alp variable. After the function printed what is in the alp variable, it call itself with alp + 1 as the parameter, thus this looks like the function is going down 1 level. This routine ended when alp variable is filled with ‘f’, it will go up to the upper level and so on until back to the top level.

It’s a little confusing for me, so I made a ‘level’ for this explanation. Every time a function (you can say function1) called another function (function2), I decided to make a function2 as level 2 function, below the level 1 function (function1). So when letter function with temp as parameter called a letter function with alp + 1 parameter, I set in my mind the letter function with temp parameter as level 1 function and letter function with alp + 1 parameter as level 2, letter function with (alp + 1) + 1 parameter as level 3 function respectively. I hope this tutorial can help.

Okay, we have some folders that have a large amount of file. We usually use a detail-view to make us easier to manage and view these large amount of files. This detail-view can give you detailed info about your files, such as file size, file type and date modified. This picture below is my mp3s folder. In detail-view, Windows give me a detailed information about my mp3 files. The first column is the file name, followed by artist name, album name, track number, genre and rating.

Detail View in Windows Explorer

Windows solved your problem of viewing large amount of files and Windows give you another problem. Windows will give you many useful information about a file, but sometimes they give you a massive information or you can say overloaded information and your window size can limit the information they gave to you. To make them fit to your window, they cut the information and if you want to see it, you have to resize the column by yourself. If you do it many times and always do resize manually when you open a folder, this will waste your time, thus you don’t have time to visit my blog.

Auto-Resized Column

This way can help you to do rezise quickly and easy. After you opened a folder, just press [Ctrl] + [+]. The window will resize the column to fit the information automatically. It will fit depends of the length of the information. As you can see above, the first column will follow the longest file name and the second column will follow the longest artist name respectively.

Does Windows XP or Vista not running as usual? Some missing shortcut and Windows wallpapers could make people feel uneasy and annoying. Maybe you’ve installed some programs but not successfully installed on your computer. After you’ve installed it, Windows can’t get itself run normally. Can’t run Task Manager, Windows always displaying error messages, you don’t have to format Windows. Windows has the built-in System Scan to check the current system files with the original files of Windows.

sfc/scannow

For XP you have to insert your XP installation CD to do scan and for Windows Vista, you have to run cmd.exe as Administrator to do this (both XP and Vista run this scan with Command Prompt). After you open it, type sfc/scannow and click enter to start the scan. It will takes some time. I tried this a long ago and it’s quicker, easier and safer than you do format.

This trick is kinda old, but for me this trick is one of the best way to recover and fix your Windows besides formatting. I once used it when still running XP and I lost my Windows wallpapers. I’m feeling uneasy when some of files of Windows are missing although they’re not so important, even not used by me. So I tried this trick and it’s work, feel relieve don’t have do format to get back my Windows wallpapers. Most of you maybe saying to me “You can copy your friend’s wallpapers, can’t you?”
